The Snake River

The Snake River in Jackson Hole runs beneath the Teton Range with a backdrop dramatic enough that experienced anglers sometimes forget to watch their line. It is the home water of the Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat — a native subspecies with a pattern of pepper-like spots denser than any other cutthroat in North America — and fishing for them here, on a river this beautiful, with those peaks in the background, is one of the genuinely unreasonable privileges available to fly anglers.

When to go

The Snake is effectively unfishable during spring runoff, which typically peaks in late May through late June with flows pushing above 15,000 cfs and visibility measured in inches. The season opens properly when flows drop below 5,000 cfs and clarity returns, usually by early to mid-July. Mid-July through August is the prime window: PMD hatches provide the first quality dry fly fishing of the season, hopper-dropper rigs take over from late July, and evening caddis flights can produce explosive surface feeding. September and October are arguably the best months for quality fishing with the lightest pressure — fall BWO hatches on overcast afternoons, October caddis on the water, and brown trout becoming active in the lower sections as spawning season approaches.

The water

The Snake through Jackson Hole is a high-gradient, freestone river fed by snowmelt from the Teton and Gros Ventre ranges, running through Grand Teton National Park and the Bridger-Teton National Forest in a corridor protected well enough that native cutthroat still thrive in their ancestral water. The river braids through a wide valley, creating a labyrinth of channels, gravel bars, and undercut banks that rewards boat anglers who know which channels hold fish. Jackson Lake Dam at the head of the valley moderates flows somewhat, but the river retains its wild character. Float fishing is the most productive approach — the braided channels and sweeper hazards make guided floats not just efficient but genuinely safer. Wading anglers who work the braided side channels accessible from key access points can find excellent fishing with considerably less boat traffic, particularly in September and October.

The crew logistics

Jackson Hole's resort infrastructure means arriving anglers have access to world-class lodging, strong restaurants, and fly shops with current intelligence that is essential for reading this river's conditions in real time. The Deadman's Bar to Moose float is the classic park-section experience; the Wilson to South Park section sees less pressure year-round and fishes well for visitors who prefer a quieter day. The Teton peaks in fall colors behind a pod of rising cutthroat is the poster, and it actually looks like that.
