The Sonoran Desert does not do subtlety: saguaro cactus framing a par-three, the McDowell Mountains going amber at dusk, fairways so green against the rust-colored desert floor that the whole scene looks like someone turned up the saturation past the point of good taste. It is, despite all of this, impeccably tasteful.

The prime golf window runs from October through April, when daytime temperatures sit in the ideal playing range and the low desert humidity makes even afternoon rounds comfortable. Winter mornings can be brisk — bring a layer — but conditions warm quickly. Summer in the Sonoran Desert is genuinely extreme; if you go in June through August, commit to the earliest possible tee times and a long afternoon by the pool.
Scottsdale's golf landscape is anchored by resort courses that take the desert setting seriously — elevated tees, dramatic forced carries over arroyos, and fairways that reward precision over power. TPC Scottsdale, home of the WM Phoenix Open, offers two courses: the Stadium Course, famous for the electric par-three 16th that becomes "The Coliseum" during tournament week, and the Champions Course, a more approachable desert routing. Beyond TPC, the valley is dense with resort and daily-fee designs from marquee architects, many set against the Camelback Mountain and McDowell Mountain backdrops that define the Scottsdale skyline. Private-club quality is the norm, not the exception, at the upper end of the market here.
Scottsdale's resort corridor along the Scottsdale Road and the Old Town area makes group logistics relatively painless: most major courses sit within a reasonable drive of one another, and the resort hotel infrastructure is extensive and purpose-built for golf travelers. Groups ranging from a foursome to a corporate outing will find packages, shuttle services, and caddie programs calibrated to their needs. The dining and nightlife scene is robust enough that the trip works even for partners who do not play.
