Yellowstone

Yellowstone is the world's first national park and its most geologically unhinged — a supervolcano wearing a thin skin of hot springs, geysers, and prismatic pools that shouldn't exist at this scale anywhere on earth. The wildlife is equally improbable: bison traffic jams, wolf packs at dawn, and grizzlies that are as indifferent to your presence as you are awestruck by theirs.

When to go

The two weeks immediately following Labor Day — roughly September 8 through 22 — represent the park's single highest-value travel window: summer crowds have cleared sharply, the elk rut begins at Mammoth Hot Springs in dramatic fashion, all roads remain open, and temperatures are moderate. Summer (June through August) provides maximum access and services but peak crowds. Late April and May offer grizzly emergence and bison calving with light crowds, though services are limited and roads open in phases. Winter delivers wolf sightings in Lamar Valley that photographers plan years for, but requires snowcoach access to most of the park's interior.

The park

Old Faithful is Yellowstone's famous punctuation mark, erupting reliably every sixty-to-ninety minutes to a crowd that never gets old no matter how many times you've seen it. The Grand Prismatic Spring in the Midway Geyser Basin — an 890-foot hot spring displaying every color in the spectrum — is best understood from the overlook trail above it. Lamar Valley in the park's northeast is North America's finest wildlife corridor: bison herds that outnumber cars at rush hour, wolves visible from established pullouts at dawn, and grizzly bears foraging within binocular range. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a 24-mile gorge carved by the Yellowstone River, drops to falls twice the height of Niagara and turns the park's thermal character into landscape art. Artists Point on the canyon's south rim is the view.

The crew logistics

Interior lodging at Old Faithful, Canyon Village, and Mammoth Hot Springs ranges from historic inn rooms to cabin clusters and must be reserved a year or more in advance for peak season. Gateway towns — West Yellowstone, Gardiner, Cooke City, Jackson — provide overflow lodging and useful services. A crew of any size will want at minimum two full days inside the park; three or four begins to do justice to the distances and the serendipity that Yellowstone rewards.
