The Coachella Valley

The Coachella Valley operates at a scale that resists easy description: more than a hundred courses stretching forty miles between mountain ranges that rise from the desert floor like a hallucination, with the San Jacinto peaks carrying snow in January while the fairways below sit in 70-degree desert light. The snowbirds discovered this place in the 1950s. They were not wrong.

When to go

The peak golf season runs from November through April, when temperatures are consistently pleasant and the valley's dramatic mountain backdrop performs its best visual work. May and October function as shoulder months — morning rounds are fully comfortable and rates step down meaningfully from peak season. June through September is brutally hot; if you go in summer, a pre-dawn tee time and a long pool afternoon is the only viable itinerary.

The golf

The valley's golf landscape is anchored by PGA West, whose Pete Dye Stadium Course — with the famous island-green 17th hole nicknamed Alcatraz — remains one of the most demanding and most photographed layouts in American golf. The adjacent Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course offers a contrasting but equally serious test. Beyond PGA West, the roster of quality daily-fee and resort courses in the valley is deep: Desert Willow Golf Resort (Firecliff and Mountain View), Indian Wells Golf Resort (Players and Celebrity courses), The Classic Club, and the Arnold Palmer Classic Course at SilverRock all deliver strong golf against the same mountain-framed desert backdrop. The valley also hosts The American Express, a PGA Tour event, in January, rotating among local courses.

The crew logistics

The Coachella Valley's lodging infrastructure is vast and well-organized, ranging from boutique hotels in Palm Springs proper to sprawling resort compounds in Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, and La Quinta. A car is essential — the valley is long and horizontal — but distances between courses are manageable. The density of courses means that even a group with strong opinions on where to play can build a multi-day itinerary without conflict. Groups of four to sixteen find the logistics here genuinely frictionless.
