Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island makes the proposition clear from the moment the bridge drops you onto it: this is a place that has been carefully arranged to please, and the golf — tucked into gated plantation communities behind curtains of Spanish moss and live oak — is among the most elegantly integrated into a landscape that American resort design has produced.

When to go

Spring and fall are the prime seasons, with April through mid-May and late September through November delivering mild temperatures, lower humidity, and firm, fast turf. Summer on a Lowcountry barrier island means heat indices well above comfortable and afternoon thunderstorms that can interrupt a back nine without ceremony; early morning tee times help but do not fully solve the problem. Winter is mild and often overlooked — courses stay open, crowds are thin, and the island's pace quiets to something genuinely restorative.

The golf

Most of Hilton Head's marquee courses sit inside gated plantation communities, which means your lodging choice largely determines which courses you can access — a planning consideration that distinguishes this destination from most. Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines, the Pete Dye design with Jack Nicklaus as consulting architect, is the headliner: a tight, tree-lined, finesse-demanding layout that has hosted the RBC Heritage PGA Tour event for decades. Sea Pines also offers Heron Point by Pete Dye and the wider-corridor Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III. Palmetto Dunes contributes three courses across different design generations: the Robert Trent Jones oceanfront layout, the Arthur Hills course, and the George Fazio design. The overall quality floor on the island is high — even the mid-tier courses are well-maintained resort golf in a coastal setting.

The crew logistics

The plantation-community model means lodging inside the right gated property unlocks the courses you want — this is the single most important logistics decision on the island. Full-service resort packages within Sea Pines or Palmetto Dunes simplify access and often include tee time priority. The island is compact and car-navigable; bike paths thread through many of the plantations for between-round transport. Groups of four to twenty or more will find package infrastructure designed precisely for them.
